Mission

The organization’s primary reason for being, its cherished beliefs and an inspirational statement that captures the essence of an ideal future should be in place before any thought can be given to the best practices needed to achieve these ends!

Principles

Principles are basic truths, laws, standards or assumptions, especially those concerning good behavior as in morial and ethical standards or judgments.

  Organization

An organization is a social arrangement which pursues collective goals, which controls its own performance, and which has a boundary separating it from its environment.

Meetings

In all organizations meetings are an important vehicle for communication.

In all organizations meetings are an important vehicle for communication. The majority of teams will, and should have face-to-face contact at least a few times a year.

  Communications

Communication includes all acts that confer knowledge and experiences, give advice and commands, and ask questions. These acts may take many forms, in one of the various manners of communication. The form must often depend both  on the abilities of the group communicating and the technologies available.

Process

A process is planned sequence of changes to a system to complete a desired objective. In organizations, most processes will require effective communication to be accomplished effectively.

    Events and Measures

Events typically take careful planning  and management cannot be executied in an ad hoc fashion.   The need and nature of the planning and control techniques will vary by the size and duration of the event, but many best practices are common to events of all sizes.

A measure is an estimate of what is to be expected (as of a person or situation), comparison of actual results to intended results is a critical part of performance evaluation and process improvement.

Policies and Standards

Policies and procedures are the nuts and bolts of any volunteer program.  A policy is a principle, plan and course of action.  policies tell people what to do.  A procedure is a series of steps that direct people how to do what they must do.

Roles & Responsibilities

Roles are defined by the actions and activities assigned to or required or expected of a person or group.

Responsibilities are the the proper sphere or extent of  an individual's or group's activities

Volunteer Program

The BCLA and all its member groups are not just volunteer driven, they are truly volunteer based.  This section describes best practices for leadership all levels.

Risk Management Manual

This is an electronic copy of a  working document that must be in the hands of the President of your Association/Club or Chair of your Directorate/Technical Support Group.  Please pass the binder on to the successor each year so that an updated Risk Management Manual is available to your group at all times.

Glossary & Site Index

This section has a glossary of terms used throughout the Best Practices web site and also serves as an alphabetical index to all pages in the site.

Each entry includes a brief definition of the word and/or the material to be found on that page and links here can be used to go directly to the topic of interest (rather than navigating though the general navigation menus).
