About Best Practices

A best practice is a technique that has proven to reliably lead to a desired result.

A commitment to using the best practices in any field is a commitment to using all the knowledge and technology at one's disposal to ensure success, so in BC Lacrosse we have developed a complete set of practices and technologies to enable us to achieve success. This set of practices encompasses our rules and regulations as well as recommendations and guidelines to assist with the efficient and effective governance, administration and operation of our organizations, events and play.  A good starting point for understanding how the various parts fit together can be found in the Best Practices Pyramid.

There are several navigation flows that can be used throughout this web site.  The main navigation tool groups individual practices into major themes that can be accessed through the left menu bar on the home page:
  • Mission  -  this section deals with the organizations cause, its future, and its current mandates
  • Principles -  this section deals with the organizations values, its guiding lights, and codes of behaviour
  • Organization -  incudes section on general considerations about organization as well as governace and also a section on aids for effective organization development
  • Meetings -   includes tools for ensuring effective meetings
  • Communications -   this section includes recommendations and tools for both effective internal communications and external (marketing and public relations) communications.
  • Processes - includes best practices and tools for both planning and execution of multi step programs and practices
  • Events and Measures -  this section includes tools for planning and executing events (including tournaments, championships etc.) as well as suggestions for measuring success as a tool for future imporvement
  • Policies and Standards -  Policies tell people what to do, while a procedure is a series of steps that direct people how to do what they must do.  Standards are a measure of acceptable achievement.
  • Roles & Responsibilities - This section also includes Job descriptions (templates) for common positions within the lacrosse community
  • Volunteer Program  - This section describes best practices for leadership all levels.
  • Risk Management  - This is an electronic copy of a  working document that must be in the hands of the President of your Association/Club or Chair of your Directorate/Technical Support Group.

Each of these groups also has a "Start Here Guide" that gives both an overview of the practices to be found in the section and and an outline of how and when they might be applicable.

The next navigation tool, also found fround the main menu on the home page, is a complete glossary and site index.  This section has a glossary of terms used throughout the Best Practices web site and also serves as an alphabetical index to all pages in the site. Each entry includes a brief definition of the word and/or the material to be found on that page and links here can be used to go directly to the topic of interest (rather than navigating though the general navigation menus) .

Finally there is a set of "Start Here Guides" that give an alternative way of navigation through the pages of this site.  Unlike the main navigation menu, which are meant to speed navigation if you already know what you are looking for, these Guides allows you to find the best place to start if you have a general idea of your concern but need some help in finding the best starting point.  Each of these sections leads you  through related Best Practices in an order that ensures that you don't miss related topics.
